Protesters injured during the July-August mass uprising blockaded the capital’s Shahbagh intersection on Thursday morning, demanding the immediate declaration of the "July Charter" and the "July Declaration".
The blockade caused severe traffic congestion in the area and widespread suffering for the public, prompting the deployment of additional police personnel.
Chanting various slogans, demonstrators said they will continue the protest until their demands are fully met.
Masud Rana Sourav, one of the movement’s organisers, said, “We have peacefully negotiated with the government multiple times, but every time we were deceived. Now we want a clear and unconditional declaration of the July Charter and the July Declaration. Otherwise, this blockade will continue indefinitely.”
Injured protester Nazir Ahmed Khan echoed the sentiment, saying, “We have shed blood for justice. We cannot be silenced through threats of abduction or death. We demand the state’s recognition of our struggle.”
Coming down heavily on the interim government, protester Md Babu Islam said, “They gave us ‘July Fighter Cards’, but we receive neither medical care nor legal support. Our demand is not for charity, but for rightful recognition under the law.”
During the demonstrations, they demanded official recognition of the July martyrs and injured; lifelong medical care, education, and welfare support for victims and their families; introduction of an honourable allowance for the injured; establishment of special legal aid centres; proper legal proceedings under international standards; and the formation of an independent truth and justice commission.
Protesters warned that if their demands are not addressed promptly, they will continue their sit-in at Shahbagh by erecting a temporary protest stage.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said, “The blockade has caused significant congestion. We have deployed additional forces to maintain order.”
