The authorities at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology have expelled two students for life for allegedly raping one of their classmates.
The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting on Tuesday, following a recommendation by the university’s disciplinary committee against Swagata Das Partho and Shanto Tara Adnan, both third-year students of the Sociology Department.
Abdul Qaium Chowdhury, a syndicate member, confirmed the news to the Daily Sun, adding that the meeting also discussed necessary measures to ensure security on campus.
The accused allegedly raped the victim after taking her to a student mess on 2 May. The victim submitted a written complaint to the university proctor on 19 June, which led to the arrest of the two students.
The following day, the victim filed a case against the accused, who were later placed on a four-day remand by a Sylhet court on 23 June.
