A section of student leaders of last year’s anti-fascist uprising is set to launch a new political platform at the Central Shaheed Minar, Dhaka University in the capital on Friday.

Ali Ahsan Zonaed and Rafe Salman Rifat, both former Chhatra Shibir leaders, have announced the launch of the United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh), the latest in a series of platforms linked to the uprising.

Ali Ahsan Zonaed and Rafe Salman Rifat, were close associates of current NCP leaders, and were highly expected to join the vaunted party of uprising leaders. However, later, they abruptly decided to not join the party, potentially due their disappointment at NCP leadership's failure in bringing into the fold uprising participants from madrasahs.

Zonaed and Rifat's ties to Islami Chhatrashibir also likely played a role against their bids to get top posts at NCP.

The newest political platform would form its convening committee from noon to evening on Friday at Central Shaheed Minar, in the presence of uprising martyrs’ families and injured participants of the mass movement.

Earlier, leaders of the uprising formed the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Jatiya Nagorik Committee, Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad and National Citizen Party.

On 10 April, Zonaed announced the plans for the newest uprising-related platform in a facebook post. The potential leaders also conducted campaigns both online and offline to gather public opinion.

The platform's initial goals would be: 1) ensuring justice for the massacres in Pilkhana in 2009, Shapla Chattar in 2013, and across the country in July-August 2024; 2) bringing an end to political violence; 3) banning Awami League as a political party; 4) forming public opinion for making self-reliant the injured uprising participants and the families of uprising martyrs.

The long-term goals would be: 1) forming ethical and capable leadership; 2) Ensuring social justice and protecting human dignity; 3) fostering a society imbued with dignity and religious beliefs; 4) combatting fascism, foreign expansionist policies, religious intolerance and corruption.

The platform would "truly" work to achieve national economic emancipation and set up a discrimination-free modern state.
