Shadman Islam’s patient, career-best 120 gave Bangladesh a strong platform on Day Two of the Chattogram Test, but the left-handed opener wasn’t entirely satisfied with how the day ended for his team.
“I could have played for a longer time in the middle,” Shadman said after stumps on Tuesday. “I think we were also in a good position but we lost our way a little bit. I think we lost three wickets more than what we desired,” he added.
Bangladesh were cruising at one stage, having reached 205 for 3 at tea. Shadman had already anchored a record 118-run opening stand with Anamul Haque — Bangladesh’s first century opening partnership in 33 innings — and then built on that with useful contributions from Mominul and Mushfiqur.
But Zimbabwe hit back in the final session, with debutant leg-spinner Vincent Masakesa picking up three wickets and Wesley Madhevere’s direct hit running out Mushfiqur Rahim. From 194 for 3, Bangladesh stumbled to 279 for 7 at stumps, leading by 64 runs.
“Otherwise we would already be in a 100-run lead,” Shadman added. “We still have Miraz and Taijul bhai around, so hopefully they can add a few more runs to extend our lead to maybe around hundred runs tomorrow,” he explained.
