Rokonuzzaman Tipu, a countryside correspondent of Kaler Kantho, on Thursday secured bail in a case filed over his scuffle with some government officials while attempting to obtain corruption data in Satkhira's Tala upazila.
The court of Satkhira District Additional Magistrate granted the bail upon receiving a Tk10,000 bond. He is expected to be released on Thursday.
On Tuesday, a mobile court arrested Tipu at Tala upazila, and sent him to 10 days in prison for allegedly getting engaged in a scuffle with government officials.
Earlier in the day, local government engineer MM Mamun Alam declined to give Tipu relevant information regarding financial irregularities in the Tk9 crore upazila parishad complex building construction project.
At one point, Mamun Alam questioned Tipu’s authority to seek information, leading to a brief fistfight.
Abul Kalam Azad, former president of Satkhira Press Club, said the arrest of Tipu angered the journalist community, prompting many to form human chains and stage sit-ins in Dhaka, Satkhira Sadar Upazila, and Satkhira’s Tala Upazila on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the journalists staged a sit-in in front of the Satkhira district administrator’s office, and subsequently submitted a bail petition with the court.
