The United States has deported 31 Bangladeshi nationals since February under President Donald Trump’s revised immigration policy.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the deportees include 30 men and one woman. Sources said they were sent back either for residing illegally in the US or after being convicted in various cases.
Most of the deportations were carried out via commercial and chartered flights. Three individuals were flown back to Dhaka under special security arrangements provided by US personnel. The most recent batch of five deportees arrived last Saturday (19 April) on a chartered flight.
Before repatriation, US authorities sought approval from the Bangladesh government and shared a list of the individuals to be deported.
A senior official from the police’s Special Branch said that the Bangladesh government maintained diplomatic efforts from the outset to ensure the deportees were treated with dignity.
“As a result of discussions with the US Embassy, the use of handcuffs and military aircraft was avoided,” the official added.
Diplomatic sources said that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has identified 400 to 500 undocumented Bangladeshis for possible deportation. A limited number of them were sent back in early March.
