Model Meghna Alam confessed that she maintained a relationship solely with the Saudi ambassador, but with no one else.

Meghna, also chairman of the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, gave the confessional statement before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday.

“Businessman Dewan Samir has been identified as my friend, but I don’t know him. I used to maintain a relationship with the Saudi ambassador,” she said while the lawmen produced her before the court.   

Earlier on Wednesday, a case was filed with Dhanmondi Police Station alleging that Meghna Alam, Businessman Dewan Samir, in connivance with some other persons, have demanded $5 million (Tk60 crore) from a diplomat.

Later on Thursday, a Dhaka court granted a petition and directed the authorities concerned to show Meghna as arrested in connection with the case.

Meghna, Smir and some unidentified persons held a secret meeting at a restaurant in Dhanmondi area of the capital Dhaka on 29 March and set an agenda to accumulate $5 million from people of the diplomatic corps through illegal means, according to the case statement.

Their plot seems intended to damage diplomatic relations with other countries, added the case statement.

Meanwhile, Meghna, also winner of the Miss Earth Bangladesh in 2020, was sent to jail for 30 days under the Special Powers Act, 1974, in the interest of public safety, security and law and order of the country.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah passed the order on Thursday night following a petition filed by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Police.
