The National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest rally in Mirpur on Tuesday, demanding the immediate arrest of former BNP leader SI Tutul following an alleged attack on NCP activists.

The incident occurred on the night of April 14 in the Rupnagar area of Mirpur, where SI Tutul, the former general secretary of the BNP's Rupnagar volunteer wing, along with his associates, allegedly assaulted NCP activists Shariful Islam and Shamim Ahmed.

Both sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Suhrawardy hospital. Additionally, Mahin Ahmed, central joint convener of the Democratic Student Council, and five others were injured in the attack.

In response, NCP's Mirpur unit organised a protest rally around 5pm at Mirpur-10's Swadhinata Chattar. The demonstration saw participation from NCP activists and leaders across various Mirpur police stations and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

During the rally, NCP's senior joint convener, Ariful Islam Adib, condemned the attack, stating, "In the new Bangladesh post-uprising, there is no place for terrorism, extortion, or land grabbing in politics. SI Tutul must be arrested immediately and expelled from all BNP positions. We urge Tarique Rahman to take action against such elements to prevent further harm to the BNP."

Other speakers at the rally included NCP central committee joint secretary Akram Hossain, organisers MM Shoaib and Imran Naeem, and member Zayed Bin Naser. The event was moderated by central organiser Abdullah Monsur, with additional remarks from injured student leader Mahin Ahmed and central deputy spokesperson Fardin Hasan

The NCP, formed by student leaders who played a pivotal role in the 2024 uprising that led to the ousting of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, continues to position itself as a force against political violence and for national unity.
