KUET authorities have decided to temporarily suspend 37 students over a violent clash between Chhatra Dal and general students in February. Authorities have also decided to reopen all student dormitories on 2 May and resume academic activities on 4 May.
The decisions were taken in an emergency syndicate meeting on Monday night, and later disclosed in a press release. In the meeting, the syndicate also accepted a probe report regarding the violence, and forwarded the report to the relevant wing for taking punitive measures.
The students continued their sit-in programme on campus, saying they will not move until all the dormitories are reopened.
On 18-19 February, over a hundred people were injured in and around the campus in a clash between Chhatra Dal activists, and general students, supported by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, as Chhatra Dal members allegedly attempted to resume student politics on campus.
In the face of student demands for legal action, the university authorities promptly filed a case with the Khanjahan Ali Police Station accusing 400-500 unidentified individuals. About a week later, the authorities also ordered shut all the dormitories indefinitely.
On Sunday afternoon, a group of students breached the university front gate and started an indefinite sit-in in front of the Administrative Building, demanding authorities reopen all residential halls without much ado. The authorities convened an emergency meeting on Monday to meet the demand.
