One BGB troop, 11 others go missing during operation to rescue fleeing Rohingyas

One BGB personnel and 11 Rohingyas went missing in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday after BGB members rushed to save a group of fleeing Rohingyas from drowning. They remained missing twenty four hours after the Saturday dawn incident.

Four Rohingyas, one child and three women, also drowned in the incident, and their bodies were retrieved, confirmed Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin.

A boat, carrying around 35 Rohingyas fleeing from the unrest in Myanmar, capsized near the western ghat of Shahporir Dwip in Cox’s Bazar early Saturday.

Some BGB personnel noticed the accident and rushed to help the Rohingyas. Due to high tides, and pitched-blackness in the night, BGB Sepoy Billal Hossain, 30, went missing.

Till Sunday morning, BGB managed to rescue twenty five Rohingyas from the sea.
