The newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), expecting to take part in the upcoming general election, urged the authorities concerned to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 years and the minimum age for candidates from 25 to 23 years.

Sarwar Tushar, joint convener of the party, initiated by the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said this while addressing a press conference, held at its central office in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said his party will present the proposal to the National Consensus Commission on Sunday, seeking its approval.

The recent student-led movement has widely been recognized as the 'Gen-Z Uprising,' referring to the demographic group born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, across the world, he said.

The election in the post-uprising Bangladesh will exclude the Gen-Z from balloting as they are fewer than 18, said the NCP leader.
