Police have dispersed a group of garment workers from a section of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Gazipur, after they blocked the crucial route demanding factory authorities extend the current Eid vacation to 12 days from 10 days.

Traffic resumed on the highway about one-and-a-half hour later, said Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim.

Earlier at 8am, workers of Utah Knitting and Dyeing Ltd blocked the highway at the Hotapara area of Gazipur.

The factory authorities declared a 10-day holiday for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, in line with other organisations of the country. But the workers demanded 12-day vacation and on Thursday blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway to press home the demand.
