A Dhaka court has recorded the confessional statement of Enamul Haque, 38, one of the accused in the gang rape of a female journalist in the capital’s Pallabi area.
On Wednesday, Pallabi police station Inspector (Investigation) Abul Qayum, the investigating officer of the case, presented Enamul and another suspect Hamidur Rahman Russell, 53, before the court.
Enamul voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement, which was recorded by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman. Following this, he was sent to prison.
The investigating officer also sought a seven-day remand for Hamidur Rahman. However, the hearing on the remand petition could not take place as the investigating officer was absent from the court.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi scheduled the remand hearing for 23 March, when the investigating officer is expected to be present, said Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad of the General Registration Section at Pallabi police station (Women and Children Court).
The incident occurred when the journalist went to the Barontek Green City area of Pallabi for news coverage on Monday night. A group of 16 men surrounded her and took her to an under-construction building, where she was gang-raped. The victim later filed a case at Pallabi police station, naming eight suspects and accusing people.
Following the complaint, police arrested Enamul Haque and Hamidur Rahman Russell from Pallabi on Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing.
