The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka commemorated the 63rd Anniversary of Algeria's Victory Day on Wednesday (19 March), with a solemn ceremony at its headquarters.

The event began with the hoisting of the national flag of Algeria accompanied by the playing of the national anthem. The gathering observed a minute of silence in honour of the fallen martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Algeria’s independence.

Following this, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, paid tribute to the brave martyrs by laying a floral wreath. The Khatib of the Gulshan Jamee Masjid, Anwarul Hoque, then recited the Fatiha and offered prayers for the martyrs, as well as for the prosperity of both Algeria and Bangladesh.

In his address, Ambassador Saidani highlighted the significance of this day, noting that it serves as a reminder of the great sacrifices made by the people of Algeria and strengthens the country’s commitment to a united future. He also drew attention to this year’s slogan, "In the footsteps of victory, loyalty to the march of the Free," which embodies the spirit of Algeria's independence struggle.

On this day, 19 March 1962, a ceasefire was declared, and the Evian Accords were signed on 18 March between the French Government and the representatives of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA). This historic agreement laid the foundation for Algeria’s self-determination referendum held on 1 July 1962, leading to the country's declaration of independence on 5 July 1962, coinciding with the 132nd anniversary of the French colonization of Algeria.

Dr. Saidani also shared insights on Algeria’s evolution into a nation of substantial potential, experiencing significant transformation across its 58 districts and expansive 2.4 million square kilometers of land. He emphasized Algeria's open-door policy aimed at promoting investments and fostering a business-friendly environment, contributing to the nation’s economic development as well as regional growth in the Sahel.

The event was attended by business leaders, dignitaries, religious figures, local journalists, and members of the embassy staff.

The celebrations concluded with a 15-minute audiovisual documentary, presented in both English and Arabic, which detailed the historical significance of the day. The documentary featured footage of the key events leading to Algeria’s independence and included remarks from French President Emmanuel Macron, who described colonization as a "crime against humanity."
