BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the interim government not to push the country towards civil war and politics of confrontation by delaying the national election.

“Does the government want to push the country towards civil war to the best of its knowledge? Don’t push the country towards destruction and anarchy,” he said while addressing a programme held in Dhamrai area of Savar on Monday.

Claiming that a new game is going on in the name of whether the local body or national election should come first, Fakhrul said it becomes difficult to conduct the local body elections unless a government elected by the people is not in place.

BNP has been struggling for the last 15 years to press home its demand for a free and fair election, but many people have already forgotten and now are engaged in bitterly criticising the party for this demand, he said.

No result will be brought by speaking against the BNP as the party is habituated to hearing such criticism since its inception, he said, adding that efforts have been hatched since then to eliminate the BNP but it went in vain.

“Since BNP’s introduction, Ershad and Sheikh Hasina have hatched a conspiracy to vanish the party but failed indeed. I believe BNP’s political strength will be stronger when it will come to power with the people’s mandates,” he said.

A certain quarter is engaged in dishing out falsehoods against BNP, blaming its leaders and activists for their alleged indulgence in extortion, Fakhrul firmly said that there is no space for extortionists in BNP politics.

The BNP is being provoked by vested interest groups to create an unstable situation in the country, but the party members will never fall into their trap, said the BNP leader.

Claiming that the BNP aims to restore a democratic system in the country alongside other political parties, he said that his party will never allow the failure of the interim government, despite its shortcomings in certain sectors.

He also blasted Sheikh Hasina for destroying the country and distorting its history and said, “She is a lucky person as she became able to flee the country by helicopter, otherwise nobody knows what consequence she would have faced.”

Sheikh Hasina fled, abandoning both her party and the country, while BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia went to jail without compromising with falsehood, he said.
