An existing ban on all kinds of political activities on KUET campus will be maintained and the students breaching the order will be expelled for life, university officials decided in a syndicate meeting on Wednesday amid student protests.
The university teachers, officers and employees also cannot get involved with any political party, the syndicate decided. On 11 August last year, the university authority imposed the ban, but a quarter has recently protested against the move, sparking counter-protests by the majority of students.
The syndicate also formed a four-member committee to investigate the violence that erupted Tuesday over the ban on student politics. The committee, led by Computer Science Professor MMA Hashem, has been asked to submit its report within three days, Pro Vice-Chancellor Shariful Alam told reporters after the syndicate meeting.
The students found guilty of causing violence on Tuesday will be temporarily suspended on campus. Regarding the outsiders involved in the violence, KUET authority will take legal measures against them.
The university administration will also bear the medical expenses of the injured. More than a hundred people sustained injuries during the hours of clashes on Tuesday with Chhatra Dal and BNP activists on one side, and general students, led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, on the opposite side.
Academic activities will remain suspended till 28 February for security purposes, the syndicate decided on Wednesday.
