Mohammad Azaz, chairman of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) River and Delta Research Centre, has been made the administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry issued a gazette in this regard on Wednesday.

According to the gazette, Azaz has been appointed for one year as a full time administrator under Section 25(a) of Local Government (city Corporation) Ordinance-2024.

He will join the post Thursday and start his duties Sunday, he told media.

Earlier, LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan recommended him for the position in a letter to Dr Mokhles Ur Rahman, senior secretary of the Public Administration Ministry, according to sources.

In the letter, the local government adviser said, "It is necessary to appoint a competent and experienced officer as an administrator to complete the functions of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) of the local government department."

“Mohammad Azaz, chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, is a competent and experienced officer. He is associated with many important works in his career. I believe that his appointment as the administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation will improve the work of this organisation and brighten up its image," the letter reads.

Recently, Adviser Asif said that the interim government is going to appoint a full-time administrator for Dhaka North.

Until now, Md Mahmudul Hasan, additional secretary of the LGRD ministry, has been serving as the administrator of DNCC, as part of his additional duties.

Mahmudul assumed the role after the interim government removed mayors of all city corporations and municipalities on 19 August last year.
