The authorities of the Bhorer Kagoj, one of the country's leading Bengali newspapers, have announced its closure in the face of journalists’ demand for wages and other benefits.
A notice was posted on the main gate of the newspaper office in Mouchak area of Dhaka, announcing that the shutdown would take effect on Monday.
Shyamal Dutta, now behind bars on corruption charges, was the editor of the newspaper, which has long been published in both print and online formats.
According to reports of the newspaper, its journalists have been demanding wages per the Eighth Wage Board and the payment of arrears from their dates of appointment over the past few days.
A section of the journalists and leaders of different journalists' unions held a demonstration in front of the newspaper's head office on Sunday.
