Role of youth in addressing food shortages and agricultural marketing challenges

Food insecurity has become one of the most pressing issues worldwide. In Bangladesh, the food crisis differs slightly from the global scenario, with unique factors exacerbating the situation. However, global crises also play a significant role.

Factors include reduced global food production due to adverse weather from climate change; decreased grain production in Ukraine because of the Russian invasion and subsequent global trade disruptions; rising global transportation and shipping costs; and the significant appreciation of the US dollar, increasing import expenses for food-importing countries, especially less developed and developing nations.

As a young individual in the country, I believe there are actions we can take. Climate change is one of today's biggest global crises, affecting not only the environment but also our economy, society, and particularly agriculture. Bangladesh, primarily an agriculture-dependent economy, had approximately 70% of its population relying on agriculture for their livelihood as of 2020. Due to its geographical location, Bangladesh is a significant victim of climate change.

As a student of agricultural economics and through my experience working in agricultural organisations, I've realised that addressing climate change and agricultural marketing challenges requires proper planning and practical measures.

Bangladeshi agriculture is predominantly nature-dependent. Climate-related issues such as irregular rainfall, drought, increased salinity, abnormal temperature fluctuations, river erosion, and cyclones directly affect agricultural production.

Our country's agricultural marketing system is not up-to-date. Natural disasters leading to crop damage reduce market supply, impacting the agricultural economy. Annually, 30 to 40% of agricultural products are lost due to natural disasters. Additionally, inadequate infrastructure for transportation, storage, and processing leads to significant product wastage, necessitating substantial food imports to meet demand.

During my time working with organisations, we've raised awareness among farmers about these issues. Connecting farmers directly with consumers can resolve many problems. For instance, creating e-commerce platforms, local markets, and mobile applications for farmers can simplify the marketing system.

The role of youth in addressing agricultural marketing and climate change challenges is vital. Collectively, we can take several steps:

1. Promoting Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices

It's essential to increase the use of climate-smart agricultural methods. Providing farmers with crop varieties that can withstand temperature changes, drought, and salinity, along with modern irrigation systems and storage technologies, is crucial.

2. Leveraging Digital Technology for Improved Marketing

Digital technology can enhance agricultural marketing. We, the youth, can create e-commerce platforms to connect farmers directly with consumers, reducing middlemen and ensuring fair prices for farmers.

3. Raising Awareness About Climate Change

Educating farmers about climate change and its impacts is necessary. Awareness can be raised through local training workshops, documentaries, and social media campaigns.

4. Formulating Specific Policies Through Collaboration

Joint initiatives between government and private organisations are needed to develop specific policies to combat the effects of climate change on agriculture, such as providing incentives to farmers affected by natural disasters and encouraging the use of technology.

The innovative thinking of the younger generation can play a significant role in solving these problems. Youth are more inclined towards new ideas and technology. By identifying local issues and creating realistic solutions, we can bring positive changes to the agricultural sector.

Agriculture is the backbone of Bangladesh's economy. However, climate change and marketing system challenges threaten this sector. Combating these challenges requires a combination of innovation, awareness, and research. Our young generation must step forward to build a sustainable agricultural system. With proper guidance and initiatives, we can overcome this crisis and ensure a prosperous and secure Bangladesh for future generations.
