A sub-inspector of police was hacked to death by miscreants in Durgapur upazila of Netrokona Thursday.

SI Shafikul Islam, who hailed from Noagaon village under the upazila, worked in Jamalpur Police Lines. He went to his village home on vacation.

The incident took place at Pan Mahal in the town’s Ukilpara area this evening.

Locals rescued the policeman and took him to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex from where he was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. He died there at night while undergoing treatment.

Confirming the news of death, Durgapur police station Officer-in-Charge Bachchu Mia said, “We sent police to the spot immediately after the incident and collected CCTV footage.”

The police are working to arrest the perpetrators, he added.
