Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), on Sunday suspended 56 students for varying terms over their alleged involvement in violence during last year’s quota reform movement.
The university also approved recommendations by its disciplinary committee to take legal action against 15 former students for their involvement in the violence.
The decisions were made during the university's 109th syndicate meeting on Sunday afternoon, said BRUR Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shawkat Ali at a press conference the same day.
According to the recommendations of the disciplinary committee, of the 56 students, 33 were suspended for two semesters, while 23 received a one-semester suspension.
Notably, Abu Sayed, a 12th-batch student of Begum Rokeya University's English Department, was killed by police gunfire during a student-led movement on 16 July last year.
