Tarique Rahman: A politician with a heart for nature and humanity

Jebu, a striped cat in shades of black, ash and white, is often seen lounging comfortably in the lap of Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). A symbol of serenity amidst political turbulence, the cat belongs to Zaima Rahman, Tarique Rahman’s only daughter. For the family, Jebu has become much more than a pet, earning a cherished place in their hearts.

Tarique Rahman, a pivotal figure in Bangladeshi politics, has spent over a decade advocating for democracy while living in exile in London since 2008, a move necessitated by what he calls repression under the Awami League regime. Beyond his political persona, Tarique’s love for nature and animals reveals a softer, deeply compassionate side.
According to close aides, Tarique Rahman’s vision for Bangladesh includes not just political reforms but also comprehensive plans for environmental conservation and animal welfare. His connection to nature is not limited to rhetoric; it is reflected in quiet actions. The BNP leader has been anonymously contributing to animal shelter homes in Bangladesh, providing financial support to help protect and care for needy animals.

Speaking virtually at a recent BNP workshop held at the Gulshan office, Tarique shared his love for animals and nature.
“There is a cat, Jebu, in my house. She belongs to my daughter. We are cat lovers,” he said.
He lamented the unnecessary cruelty some people inflict on animals, stressing the importance of teaching compassion at an early age.
“If we start teaching children about the value of caring for animals from the primary level, we will see positive changes as they grow,” he said.
Tarique Rahman went further to outline his vision for fostering responsibility and empathy among young minds. If BNP comes to power, he plans to encourage schoolchildren to keep and care for pets as a part of their education.

“This will help instil a sense of responsibility in them,” he added.
Tarique Rahman’s love for trees and green spaces is equally profound.
“I have a weakness for trees, especially large ones,” he shared.
Recalling a deeply personal moment, he expressed his heartbreak when an ancient tree in Bogura’s Khokon Park was cut down during renovations under the Awami League government.
“If we are elected, we will plant five crore trees across the country to create a greener environment,” he pledged.
His environmental agenda extends to water conservation as well. He plans to implement nationwide canal-digging projects to improve water reserves, reduce the risk of natural disasters and protect the environment.

Even from London, Tarique Rahman has been actively contributing to the welfare of animals and the environment.
Atikur Rahman Ruman, convener of Amra BNP Poribar, disclosed that Rahman had instructed his team to provide monthly financial support to animal shelters in Dhaka.
“The owners of the shelters do not even know who provides the money,” Ruman said.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi described Tarique Rahman as a man with a strong personality and a kind heart.
“He is not just a politician; he is a true patriot. He wants to make the country liveable for all – humans, animals and nature,” Rizvi said.
Tarique Rahman’s vision for a reformed Bangladesh encompasses environmental sustainability, accountability in governance and a society free from discrimination. Alongside his political mission, he has been involved in philanthropic activities for years, often helping the helpless and standing by oppressed people, including BNP supporters.
“Many of his charitable works, done out of genuine care, remain hidden,” he added.
Through his actions and vision, Tarique Rahman redefines leadership by blending political determination with compassion for nature, animals and humanity. His story offers a glimpse into the heart of a leader striving to create a better, more inclusive Bangladesh for all.
