Rakibul Hasan Rocky’s stunning hat-trick propelled Bangladesh Air Force into the semifinals of the Paragon Group Victory Day Hockey tournament at Maulana Bhashani Stadium on Thursday. Air Force secured a dominant 6-3 win against Bangladesh Army, topping Group B.
Hockey Players Welfare Unity also reached the semifinals from the same group, edging out Bangladesh Army on goal difference. All three Group B teams finished with three points, but goal differences decided the standings: Air Force (+2), Hockey Players Welfare Unity (0), and Bangladesh Army (-2).
In Group A, Bangladesh Navy cruised into the semifinals as group champions after a commanding 9-1 victory over Bangladesh Police. Navy’s Ashraful showcased his talent with a hat-trick, while BKSP claimed the runner-up spot to secure the other semifinal berth.
The Air Force team started strong, with Sohanur Rahman Sobuj converting two penalty corners in the opening two minutes. Army responded with goals from Sagor Hossain in the 8th minute and Mamun Miah, who leveled the score in the 17th. However, Rocky turned the game around with two quick goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes, including a brilliant solo effort. He completed his hat-trick with the sixth goal in the 58th minute, while Obaidul Hasan Joy also found the net for Air Force. Manoj Babu scored Army’s third goal in the 53rd minute.
Banhladesh Navy will play the first semi against Hockey Players Welfare Unity at 12.30 pm on Saturday. The second semifinal will be held between Bangladesh Air Force and BKSP at 2.30 pm.
