A Swechchhasebok League leader, who opened fire on students and protesters during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the port city, has been arrested in Feni.
The arrestee, Mithun Chakraborty, 40, is the president of Swechchhasebok League’s Chawkbazar ward unit and a close aide of Nur Mustafa Tinu, former councillor of Chawkbazar ward under the Chittagong City Corporation.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Rois Uddin told the Daily Sun that an investigation revealed that Mithun fired bullets from a pistol during attacks on the protesters on 16 July and 4 August.
On information, he was arrested from the Sultanpur area in Feni district headquarters on Sunday night.
He is accused in a violence-related case filed with Panchlaish Model Police Station, said the DC, adding that the firearm Mithun used during the incident could not be recovered.
Mentionable, at least 40 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate organisations were spotted brandishing weapons and opening fire in broad daylight during the July-August uprising in the port city.
However, since the fall of the Awami League government, law enforcement agencies could arrest only seven of them. None of the firearms used during the attacks could be recovered.
