Vegetable, onion prices slide on fresh supply

Prices of most of the vegetables including potato and onion have dropped in the capital’s kitchen markets with the arrival of newly harvested crops. However, prices of broiler and Sonali chicken, cooking oil and rice are still high, following the soaring trend of prices of many essentials.
Locally produced onions sold at Tk100 to Tk120 per kilogram, depending on quality, while Indian onions sold at Tk80-100 per kilogram on Friday.
Just a week ago, local onions sold at Tk120-140, and Indian onions at Tk90-110 per kilogram.
Onion leaves sold at Tk70-80, while onion stalks sold at Tk100 per kilogram at Dhaka markets.
Visiting different kitchen markets at Mirpur on Friday, this correspondent found that eggplant sold at Tk80 per kilogram, yardlong beans at Tk100, and okra was Tk70-80 per kilogram.
The price of cauliflower declined to Tk30-40 per piece from Tk50-60 per piece, depending on size, and that of cabbage declined to Tk40-50 each. Radishes sold at Tk30-40 per kilogram, while carrots at Tk80 per kilogram.
Sweet pumpkin sold at Tk50, pointed gourds at Tk70, bitter gourds at Tk100, cucumbers at Tk60-70, snake gourd at Tk100, capsicum at Tk300, bean at Tk50-6, green chilli at Tk120 per kilogram, and ripe tomatoes at Tk110-150 per kilogram, and large bottle gourd at Tk60 piece. On the weekend, the price of each bundle of red spinach, spinach, and water spinach was Tk10-15, which was Tk20 a week ago.
Old potatoes sold at Tk80 per kilogram on that day, while the price of new potatoes declined to Tk70-80 from TK90-110 per kilogram in a week.
Aminul Haque, an onion and potato trader at Mirpur-13, said newly harvested onions, potatoes and other winter vegetables are arriving in the market. For this reason, the prices of these items have been dropping gradually day by day.
The supplies of the essential items will increase further soon after harvest of a bulk amount is completed, he added.
However, many customers expressed their dissatisfaction with the current prices of different products.
Sazedur Rahman, a consumer at Mirpur-13 kitchen market, said the prices of vegetables have not declined at a reasonable level yet.
The price of farm eggs has declined to Tk140 per dozen from Tk150 during that period.
On Friday, broiler chicken sold at Tk180-190, and Sonali chicken at Tk290-310 per kilogram.
Medium-size Rui fish sold at Tk320-340, Katla at Tk300-340 per kilogram, while larger Rui and Katla fish were priced at Tk600-700 per kilogram.
Pangas fish sold for Tk180-220 per kilogram, depending on size, and Silver Carp was available at around the same price range.
Among the relatively cheaper fish, Tilapia sold for Tk180-220 per kilogram, depending on size.
Meanwhile, imported garlic sold at Tk230-240, while locally produced garlic was priced at Tk240-260 per kilogram.
Bottled soybean oil could not be found in the shops over the past few weeks, but on Friday, edible oil bottles with new prices were spotted at some places. Currently, packaged soybean oil sells at Tk175 per litre.
