Women to wear clothes whatever they want: Jamaat Ameer

In a dramatic change in their political philosophy, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that women will be allowed to wear whatever clothes they choose if the party is voted to power in the next general election.

“Why will we keep our women in confinement? They will dedicate themselves to the betterment of the country according to their ability. We will not compel them in terms of wearing clothes,” he said.

Shafiqur Rahman made the pledge while addressing a programme held at Shatkhira Government High School ground on Saturday.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is the largest Islamist political party in the country but there is no women leadership in the party’s policymaking bodies.

In the past, many leaders of Jamaat were often seen raising their voices against the women’s movement without the hijab.

Staying aside from the party’s past stance, Shafiqur Rahman said that women will be equally protected both in their homes and workplaces if his party comes to power and no one will dare to dishonor them.

People have spread propaganda claiming that the woman will not be allowed to come out of their residences if Jamaat is voted to power, he said adding, “I am giving you word it will not happen ever.”
