Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has expressed deep concern over the incident where eggs were thrown at a High Court judge during the court proceedings.
He expressed the concern in a statement issued by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
While addressing a programme, the chief justice separately asked the attorney general and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president to take stern action in this regard.
"I'll work with devotion and honesty. I'll do everything to establish justice in society following the mass upsurge. Our sense of justice had been destroyed over the years," he said in response to the felicitation accorded to him by Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and SCBA President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon at the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the SCBA chief later said stern action will be taken against those who were involved in the incident. "Steps will be taken to cancel their enrolment certificate with the Bangladesh Bar Council as well as the SCBA membership," he said while talking to reporters on the SC premises.
In the statement published on its website, the SC said the chief justice expressed his deep concern over the unprecedented incident that occurred on Wednesday in the High Court and also other untoward situations at other courts across the country in recent times.
The Supreme Court has been observing the overall situation to ensure that courts can provide justice to the people without interruption, according to the statement.
The apex court assured that the entire judiciary continues to work to uphold justice despite various obstacles and unwanted situations.
It also said the chief justice had already taken necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. In addition, he gave directives to all the courts and tribunals to continue regular activities in the interest of the country.
A group of lawyers on Wednesday threw eggs at Justice Md Ashraful Kamal at the High Court during the proceedings for allegedly making 'adverse comments about late President Ziaur Rahman in a verdict, forcing the two judges of the bench to leave the courtroom.
The HC bench was hearing and disposing of cases in the courtroom after lunch. At that time, a group of lawyers entered the courtroom and told Justice Ashraful Kamal that he had no right to hold the office of a judge anymore as he made adverse comments about the BNP founder in a verdict.
At one stage, a few of them threw eggs at him. Both the judges of the HC bench then left the courtroom.
Justice Ashraful Kamal was appointed as an HC judge on 12 December 2010 during the regime of the deposed Sheikh Hasina-led government.
In the verdict in the 'Asaduzzaman vs Bangladesh case' in 2016, the HC judge observed that Ziaur Rahman was not only the collaborator of the killers of the father of the nation and his family and the killers of the four national leaders but also awarded them by making them ambassadors, parliamentarians, etc.
In the verdict, Justice Ashraful Kamal said, "Major General Ziaur Rahman seized the presidency through coercion, violating his oath as a public servant. … He seized the people's institutions at gunpoint."
The verdict also compared Ziaur Rahman's actions to those of a bandit leader. "Bandits often operate in groups, with a leader orchestrating the robbery. Similarly, Zia, along with others, dissolved the elected parliament using unconstitutional means, usurping the people's power through force, akin to a band of robbers."
Justice Ashraful Kamal also criticised Ziaur Rahman for enacting the Indemnity Ordinance.
