Leg spinner Rishad Hossain may get the chance to play in the Big Bash League (BBL) 14 for Hobart Hurricanes, but only for three matches.

Rishad could become only the second Bangladesh cricketer after Shakib Al Hasan to play in the BBL as he was drafted by Hobart Hurricanes, but uncertainty shrouded his participation, with conflicting commitments from his Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise, Fortune Barishal, complicating his chances of joining the BBL.

The timing of both tournaments was a significant hurdle.

BBL 14 is scheduled to run from 15 December 2024 to 27 January 2025, while the BPL takes place from 30 December 2024 to 7 February 2025.

Fortune Barishal reportedly prefer Rishad to remain with them for the entire BPL, potentially blocking his path to one of the world’s most prestigious franchise leagues.

Rishad, who was roped in by Rangpur Riders for Global Super League, was earlier asked about his participation in the BBL next month during his training with the Riders last week.

“I don’t know yet. If Allah wills, maybe (I will play),” he said, reflecting both hope and uncertainty.

However, Mizanur Rahman, the owner of Fortune Barishal franchise, said on Monday that they have allowed Rishad to play for Hobart, not for the full season though.

Rishad will be allowed to play three matches in the BBL till 27 December and then join Barishal team before their opening match in BPL on 30 December.

“We have granted him NOC till 27 December. This was our decision. He can play in BBL till 27 December and then join our team before our tournament opener,” Mizanur Rahman said on Monday.

Hobart Hurricanes will play their opening match against Melbourne Renegades on 19 December followed by matches against Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers respectively on 21 and 27 December.

According to Mizanur, Rishad requested the Barishal franchise to allow him to play the match on 27 December before joining Barishal camp.

“He requested us to play the match on 27th December. We allowed him,” he said.

“We let the board know a month ago. It didn’t change,” he concluded.
