Vehicular movement resumed in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area on Monday afternoon hours after the students of Government Titumir College called off their blockade in the busy thoroughfare.
Around 11:30am, hundreds of students took to the streets blocking the road and railway tracks, demanding the upgradation of their institution to a university.
Commuters and travellers suffered immensely due to the demonstrations. Many were seen heading towards their destination on foot.
Several passengers, including a child, were injured as demonstrators allegedly pelted brickbats at a moving train.
The railways authorities said the Upakul Express from Noakhali was crossing the Mohakhali level crossing during the demonstrations. Protesters threw stones at the train, damaging windows and injuring some passengers.
Tejgaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md Mobarak Hossain said the students left the spot around 4pm and traffic movement resumed then.
Due to the demonstrations, trains got stranded at different stations and were already running behind schedules, causing huge suffering to passengers waiting at station platforms.
However, staging demonstrations for hours, the students headed toward their campus. Meanwhile, a delegation of the demonstrators went to the secretariat to discuss the issue with advisers.
Students said their next course of action will be announced after the delegation returns to the campus.
On 24 October, Titumir students took to the streets to press home their same demand.
