Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists stormed into a meeting of the Dhaka University (DU) syndicate on Wednesday night to protest against the participation of Awami League-backed teachers in the meeting.

However, the activists of BNP’s student wing attributed the action to “general students,” likely because political party-linked student politics has been banned on DU campus.

The JCD activists also demanded the removal of the blue panel, the group of Awami League-allied DU teachers, from the syndicate members’ list.

Awami League leaders and active supporters are widely blamed for directly or indirectly orchestrating attacks on student-led anti-fascist protests during the July-August mass uprising.

JCD’s DU unit members told the Daily Sun that Awami League-backed teachers played a “very dirty rule” to legitimise the Awami League’s 16-year authoritarian rule over the country.

The regime fell in a student-led uprising on 5 August, and yet, the pro-fascist teachers are continuing to enjoy the same policy-making power at DU.

“This trend contradicts with the spirit of the July-August uprising that is why we went there [syndicate meeting] to protest the pro-Awami League teachers’ participation,” JCD activists told the Daily Sun.

DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told the Daily Sun that some students broke into the syndicate meeting on Wednesday evening demanding exclusion of some syndicate members, whom they marked as the collaborators in fascism

“We will look after the matter,” the proctor said.

Nahid Uddin, convener of DU JCD, said, “We came to know that some common students of Dhaka University protested against the existing syndicate committee as this committee clearly implemented the plans and orders of Awami fascists. Some members of this committee are also responsible for vacating student dormitories on 17 July and perpetrating police attack on students in July-August.”

“We strongly support this action of students [against the pro-Awami League syndicate members]. During our meeting with DU authority, we raised the issue.”
