BNP Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described former foreign minister of the ousted government Hasan Mahmud’s proposal to work together to retrieve the country’s democracy as a farce.

“It’s like the devil listening to the scriptures. People don’t believe in talks of democracy in their faces,” Fakhrul said in response to the call without clarifying his party’s stance in this regard.

Hasan Mahmud fled the country in the wake of the 5 August political changeover and is now staying in London.

In an interview with the London-based television channel 'Channel S' on Sunday, Hasan Mahmud, also the joint general secretary of Awami League, said that his party is willing to collaborate with BNP to restore democracy.

During the interview, he confessed that it was a great political failure of Awami League to involve BNP in elections held under its management.

Hasan also expressed his party’s solidarity with BNP on its current political stance, including the call for a ban on Awami League politics in the country.

There is no such thing as a final word in politics and this very Awami League leader again proved its authenticity by making such a call to his party’s political archrival BNP.

Although Hasan Mahmud served as the foreign minister of the ousted government, he was consistently involved in attacking and criticising the BNP, both with and without justification.

Many Awami League leaders, including its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, were also engaged in criticising the BNP in the same manner.

But, Hasan Mahmud is one of the party leaders who was a harsh critic of the BNP during the long rule of Awami League.

While talking to journalists over the call, Fakhrul said the countrymen have driven them out of the country to restore democracy.

“The talks of democracy are indecorous in their faces. Awami League has killed democracy,” he added.

Earlier, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy also made a similar call to BNP for the sake of democracy.
