Indian home minister Amit Shah on Sunday said illegal land border crossing by Bangladeshis into the West Bengal state was spurring tensions, and to establish lasting peace, BJP will stop the infiltrations on being elected to rule the state in 2026.

On being elected in West Bengal, BJP will ensure Bangladeshi travelers use legal modes to enter the Indian state and will also bolster ties with the neighbouring country in the areas of business and cultural exchange, the firebrand Hindu nationalist leader noted.

Amit Shah made the comments when inaugurating a modern passenger terminal building at Petrapole, West Bengal. The terminal building is aimed at boosting travel and business activities between India and Bangladesh.

“In establishing peace in the region, land ports play an important role. When there is no scope for the legal movement of people across the border, illegal modes of movement arise, which impacts the peace of the country. I urge the people of [West] Bengal to bring in change in 2026 [by electing BJP to state govt post], and we will stop infiltration, and peace will come,” he said.

There can be peace in Bengal only when infiltration stops Land ports play an important role in improving connectivity and relations between the two countries. They also enhance trade relations between the two nations, he added.

During his speech, he slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for its alleged corruption and urged the people of West Bengal to seek political change in 2026.

He also assured that “Achhe Din” will come to Bengal after counting of 2026 assembly polls is completed and BJP comes to power. “Peace will come once infiltration stops. Partnership with neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar in terms of business and cultural aspects will be enhanced. In terms of progress, several initiatives can be possible,” Shah said as he inaugurated the Passenger Terminal Building and Maitri Dwar at Land Port in Bengal's Petrapole on Sunday.
