A case has been filed with a Dhaka court against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former state minister Tarana Halim, former MP Momotaz Begom, actress Shomi Kaiser and 13 others for attempting to kill a BNP activist in 2022.

Victim Syed Hasan Mahmud filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain on Wednesday.

The magistrate recorded the statement of the complainant and asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police to submit a report after investigation.

Former Law Minister Anisul Huq, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, Jatiya Party leader Moshiur Rahman Ranga and former Detective Branch of police chief Harun Or Rashid are among the other accused named in the case.

According to the case statement, the complainant filed a case against Ranga on 21 November 2021 for making indecent comments about Nur Hossain, who was killed in 1990 during the anti-Ershad protests. But the court summarily dismissed it.

For filing the case, he was threatened with death and his home was vandalised.

"I was a councillor candidate in the city corporation election in 2019. In line with that I started campaigning in different places. But the aforesaid accused forbade me to do so," Hasan said.

"On 25 June 2022, I was picked up from Rampura Bridge and taken to an unknown place on a microbus where I was tortured. Later on 29 June, I was abandoned in the Hatirjheel area by the miscreants," the complainant added. Former minister MA Mannan granted bail

Meanwhile, a Sunamganj court on Wednesday granted bail to former Planning Minister MA Mannan in a case filed over attacks on students and people during the quota reform movement.

Sunamganj District and Sessions Judge Md Hemayed Uddin granted the bail on a Tk20,000 bond considering the former Sunamganj-3 lawmaker's advanced age and health issues.

Mannan's lawyer Abdul Hamid confirmed the information, saying the former minister is severely ill and mentally distressed.

He said, "We filed the bail plea on Tuesday and the court today (Wednesday) granted his bail considering his health condition."

Case against former Jatiya Party MP Yahya

A case was filed against Yahya Chowdhury, former Jatiya Party MP from Sylhet-2 constituency, on charges of attacking the students during the quota reform movement.

The case was filed by Sabur Ali Sabu, a resident of Kumarpara, alleging an attack on students at the Kumarpara Point in Sylhet city.

Yahya Chowdhury was elected MP from the constituency as a candidate of Jatiya Party in the 10th parliamentary elections in 2014.

Former MP Sohrab Uddin arrested

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday arrested former Kishoreganj-2 constituency MP Advocate Sohrab Uddin from the Diabari area of Uttara in the capital.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Media wing) of RAB headquarters Imran Khan confirmed the matter to the media.

According to the RAB headquarters, the former lawmaker was arrested on charges of ordering and financing attacks on students and common people during the quota reform movement.

He faces four cases filed in Kishoreganj and Pakundia police stations.

Gini sent to jail

A Gaibandha court on Wednesday sent former MP from Gaibandha-2 constituency Mahbub Ara Begum Gini to jail after rejecting her bail petition.

Gaibandha's Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Abdul Matin passed the order when police produced her before the court seeking a 10-day remand in a case filed over the vandalism and arson attack on the party office of the BNP.

Earlier on 30 September, detectives arrested Gini from a residence in the capital's Dhanmondi area.
