BGB personnel have arrested a youth when carrying valuable sperm whale's vomit worth nearly Tk21 crore from Shah Porir Dwip of Cox’s Bazar.

On Monday, the Oceanographic Research Institute confirmed the seized 8.4-kilogram consignment as sperm whale's vomit or ambergris, which is a rare product in Bangladesh but is a crucial input for perfume and pharmaceutical industries.

Due to its rarity and high value, ambergris sale is banned in the country, BGB sources told reporters.

On Sunday, a team of BGB intercepted a man over suspicious movement when he was approaching the Bazarpara area in Shah Porir Dwip.

After searching his bag, BGB found the ambergris.

BGB later handed over the accused to the Teknaf Police Station, and submitted the seized ambergris to the treasury section of Cox’s Bazar district administration.
