Travel ban imposed on Chy Nafeez Sarafat

A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on Padma Bank’s former chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat amid intelligence reports he could flee the country to evade corruption probes.

Sarafat faces numerous allegations of taking bribes, embezzling people’s money, laundering money, manipulating share prices of companies and engaging in other forms of financial irregularities.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain passed the travel ban order in response to an application made by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

In its written statement, the ACC said the graft watchdog is investigating allegations of widespread corruption against Sarafat.

During its investigation, the ACC has learnt that the former banker amassed huge illegal assets in Canada and other overseas places by misusing his ties to the then ruling Awami League party.
