US energy giant Chevron’s Bangladesh unit and environmental organisation Green Savers have jointly inaugurated a tree plantation program in the vicinity of Chevron Bangladesh's Bibiyana Gas Plant in Habiganj.
The five-year tree plantation programme aims to transform the landscape around the Bibiyana Gas Plant, says a press release issued Tuesday.
This initiative will see the planting of over 4,000 high-quality seedlings, including a variety of flowers, fruit trees, wood trees, and medicinal plants.
Prioritising indigenous species, the programme aims to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and provide food and shelter for local wildlife.
Additionally, the plantation of Debdaru trees, known for their sound-absorption qualities, will help reduce noise pollution, creating a more peaceful environment.
This project is not just about beautification. Rather it’s a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, the press release added.
Green Savers will oversee the plantation and maintenance, ensuring the health and growth of the trees.
Speaking about the initiative, Fardoush Anwar, director of the Sylhet divisional office of Department of Environment, said, "This show of corporate responsibility towards environment deserves praise.”
Eric M Walker, president and managing director of Chevron Bangladesh, said “tree plantation offsets carbon emissions and helps build a greener, healthier future. Our tree plantation campaign reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. We aim to nurture these trees for lasting benefits to the environment and community.”
In his welcome speech, Ahsan Rony, founder of Green Savers, said if top corporate houses like Chevron take such a planned and sustainable initiative to build a green Bangladesh and protect the environment, the country will be greener.
The event’s other guests included: Md Nur E Alam Siddiquee, deputy director of Habiganj Agricultural Extension Department; Anupam Das Anup, upazila nirbahi officer of Nabiganj upazila; Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, upazila agriculture officer of Nabiganj; Mohammad Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Nabiganj Police Station; Muhammad Imrul Kabir, corporate affairs director at Chevron Bangladesh; as well as local UP chairman, environmentalists and others.
