Two former vice chancellors (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU), university chief security officer and many others have been sued over attacks on students during the July quota reform movement.

Sajjadul Islam, a postgraduate student of the university, filed the case on Saturday.

Officer-in-Charge of the Ashulia Police Station Abu Bakar Siddik confirmed the matter on Sunday evening.

Outgoing vice-chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam, outgoing proctor Prof Alamgir Kabir, former proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan, former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, Assistant Registrar Rajib Chakraborty, Deputy Registrar Nahidur Rahman Khan, Chief Security Officer Sudipta Shaheen, Social Sciences Faculty Dean Prof Bashir Ahmed, JU Chhatra League President Aktaruzzaman Sohel, JU Chhatra League General Secretary Habibur Rahman Liton were named as accused, among others. About 150-200 unidentified people were also accused in the case.

A group of students were attacked by Chhatra League men during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at around 6pm on 15 July this year. The Chhatra League terrorists were armed with machetes, sticks, rods and other local weapons.

In the face of the medieval-style attacks, the students took shelter in the vice-chancellor’s residence and demanded justice against Chhatra League, the case statement read.

At point, BCL’s JU unit President Aktaruzzaman Sohel led his team of goons to ambush the students at the VC residence with the intention to kill them.

Some of the accused, including the outgoing VC and proctor also were ambushed during the incident, the plaintiff alleges.
