A case has been filed against 15 individuals, including a Dhaka University residential hall provost, over the mob killing of a young man named Tofazzal on suspicion of theft at the dorm earlier this month.

On Wednesday, the victim's cousin Asma Akhtar submitted a complaint in this regard to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Akteruzzaman in Dhaka. The court accepted the application and ordered filing a case.

The plaintiff’s lawyer Nazmul Hasan said that the court accepted the case.

However, the investigation into the case has been suspended for the time being as another case had already been filed regarding the incident.

The court will recall the case. After that, the investigation of the case will continue by coordinating the two complaints.

The accused in this case are Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Provost Prof Shah Muhammad Masum, Jalal Mia, Suman Mia, Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, Al Hossain Sajjad, Wajibul Alam, Ahsan Ullah, Fazle Rabbi, Yamus Zaman, Rashed Kamal Anik, Shahriar Kabir Shovan, Mehdi Hasan Imran and Md sultan. They are all students of Dhaka University.

It is learnt that Tofazzal Hossain was beaten up in front of the Salimullah Muslim Hall of Dhaka University on 18 September on suspicion of being a thief.

Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

The issue sparked massive social media criticisms, leading to the revelation that Tofazzal was a mental patient.

Mohammad Amanullah, supervisor of the university's asset office, filed a case with Shahbagh police station after the incident. Police arrested six students in this connection.

The arrestees admitted their guilt in court and made a statement. These six suspects are currently in prison.

They are Jalal Mia, Sumon Mia, Md. Mottakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad, Ahsan Ullah and Wajibul Alam.
