Traders resumed importing Indian potatoes on Wednesday, ending a nearly 90-day break, as prices of the commodity have fallen allowing imports at Tk40-41 per kilogram.
Two potato-laden trucks entered the country through the Hili land port to bring in the first consignment.
Yusuf Ali, deputy secretary of Plant Quarantine Centre at Hili land port, told reporters that initially traders have been allowed to import 22,000 metric tonnes of potatoes from India.
Traders kept importing Indian potatoes due to their relatively lower prices until 8 July, when they had to stop the purchases seeing prices suddenly increasing in the neighbouring country.
However, a fall in Indian prices, and cuts in import taxes from 15% to 3% have encouraged importing companies to resume cross-border purchases.
