In Bangladesh, where work culture tends to prioritise long hours and dedication above all else, the need for a shift towards a more compassionate and understanding approach to employee welfare is paramount.
To this end, non-profit It’s Humanity Foundation (IHF) has introduced Non-Explanatory Leave (NEL) as one of the primary methods for safeguarding IHF employees’ mental health, says a press release.
The NEL policy allows all regular full-time employees to take one day of leave per year without providing a reason, as per guideline of the platform.
Employees must submit their request through the regular leave process, and confidentiality is ensured. NEL can be used for mental health reasons, and resources and support are available for employees.
“Responsible use of NEL is expected, and compliance with labour laws is ensured. This policy aims to prioritize employee mental health and create a supportive workplace culture,”
IHF founder and executive director Adnan Hossain said that non-explanatory leave was implemented to give our employees a way out whenever they felt like they needed some time off, without having to go through endless explanations.
“I believe that at some point, everyone undergoes stress, anxiety or burnout and our NEL policy allows my team to put their mental health first without being judged or questioned,” he said.
Adnan further added that organisations can demonstrate their commitment to supporting their employees' mental health and well-being by introducing NEL.
“It sends a powerful message that mental health is valued and prioritized, promoting a culture of trust, empathy, and understanding within the workplace.”
Non-Explanatory Leave implementation in Bangladesh work culture demands a collective input from both the employers and employees.
Additionally, IHF also recognizes the unique needs of their female employees and supports their well-being through a monthly Menstruation Holiday Policy. This policy allows female employees to avail themselves up to 3 work-from-home provisions per month during their menstrual cycle, providing flexibility and comfort during this time.
