2 DU professors appointed as UGC members

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has appointed two Dhaka University professors, Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan from the international relations department and Mohammad Anwar Hossain from the sociology department, as its full-time members.
The Ministry of Education issued a notification to this effect on Thursday.
According to a notification, the terms of their appointments will be four years. However, if the government deems it necessary, it can relieve the two of duty before the expiry of the prescribed period. The appointments will be effective from the date of their joining.
Earlier this month, all members of the commission, including its chairman, resigned following the fall of the Awami League-led government on 5 August.
The interim government then appointed Dr SMAFaiz, a former professor in the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment at DU, as chairman of the UGC.
Meanwhile, the government has appointed Dr ABM Badruzzaman, a professor of the Civil Engineering Department of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), as its new vice chancellor (VC).
The education ministry issued a notification in this regard on Thursday saying that he will be appointed for a four-year term.
Badruzzaman will receive the same salary and allowances as his current position and will reside on the campus full-time.
The president, also the chancellor of the university, can revoke the appointment if necessary, said the notification.
Besides, Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, professor of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, has been appointed as the pro vice chancellor of BUET for four years.
The education ministry issued another notification in this regard on the same day.
According to the notification, the tenure of his appointment as pro-vicechancellor will be four years. He will receive salary and benefits equivalent to his current position and will enjoy other related perks as per regulations.
Another notification announced Dr Mamun Ahmed, a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Dhaka University, as the new pro-vice chancellor (education) of the university.
Dr Mamun has been appointed for a four-year term from the date of joining. “The president and chancellor of the university can cancel the appointment at any time,” the notification added.
Additionally, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam of Dhaka University's Physics department has been appointed as the vice chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on the same day.
