At least 10 people were injured in a clash between traders and BNP activists and leaders in Old Dhaka on Wednesday.
The incident took place following an assault on Bikrampur Garden City President Babul Hossain Babu at Islampur and a subsequent attack on the market allegedly by the BNP men.
Locals said the party activists and leaders on Tuesday demanded Tk10 lakh in extortion from Babu who refused to pay it.
On Wednesday, they beat him up and attacked the market in Bikrampur Garden City.
In protest, traders from Patuatuli, Islampur, and Sadarghat areas took to the streets, and a clash erupted between the two sides.
After assaulting Babu, traders said, over 200 BNP activists, armed with knives, machetes, and other locally made weapons, attacked the market.
The attack was led by local leaders Sohrab Hossain and Noor Hossain, they said.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Enamul Hasan said Noor Hossain and others beat up Babul Hossain Babu.
The attackers might be linked to the Chhatra Dal, the OC said, adding that three people were detained for their suspected involvement in the attack.
