Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has claimed to have found evidence of 859 people’s deaths elsewhere in the country during the recent student protest that ensured the complete overthrow of the Awami League government on 5 August.
Of the deaths, 708 were identified while the identities of the rest 151 could not be known immediately, said the HRSS and nonprofit rights body in a statement on Tuesday.
Alongside, at least 30,000 people from different walks of life sustained injuries during the students’ anti-government movement enforced on quota reform issue, it said.
The HRSS published the data after collection information of the country’s 12 renowned newspapers, said the statement.
However, based on hospital and many trustworthy sources including the victims’ families, the rights body predicts that the death toll may reach 1,000.
Over 1,000 people lost either their hands, legs, or their eyes during the movement, which continued until 5 August.
