A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and 611 others in connection with the death of a day labourer during the mass uprising in Munshiganj.
The victim is Nur Mohammad Sardar, 19, and the case was filed by his grandmother Shefali Begum with Munshiganj Sadar Police Station on Thursday, said Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
The case names four former MPs, along with leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, listing 313 individuals by name and including an additional 200–300 unidentified persons, the OC added.
According to the case statement, on the morning of 4 August, a peaceful student-public protest was taking place in front of the Agricultural Bank near the Super Market area in Munshiganj town, demanding the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government. Nur Mohammad participated in the protest.
At that time, under the joint directive of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and former MPs Mohammad Faisal, Mrinal Kanti Das, and Sagufta Yasmin, the accused attacked the students and public with weapons, cocktails, knives, and machetes.
The 18th accused, Sajjat Hossain, General Secretary of the City Chhatra League, shot Nur Mohammad in the chest. Other accused then hacked and beat him severely. Additionally, the attackers fired indiscriminately, detonated cocktails, and assaulted and hacked others in the crowd.
Following the incident, Nur Mohammad was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. On the same day, Riazul Faraji and Sajal Molla were also shot and killed in the clash.
OC Aminul Islam said that the case was registered based on the plaintiff's statement. “All the accused are currently absconding, and the police are working to apprehend them,” he said.
