Jahangirnagar University students on Friday brought out a protest procession and held a rally on the campus, blaming India for the ongoing flash floods in Bangladesh.
The protesters claimed that the worsening flood situation in large parts of Bangladesh is a direct result of India’s opening of Dumbur dam upstream of the Gumti River in Tripura.
The demonstrations, organised under the banner of "Jahangirnagar University Students," began with a procession from the university’s Shaheed Minar premises and ended in the Battola area following a brief rally.
Addressing the rally, speakers sought quick diplomatic action from Dhaka to enact the existing water-sharing agreements with India and emphasised reducing flood-affected area’s damages.
"Dhaka should raise its voice against India’s aggressive policies that have reportedly put millions of lives in danger. India is using its water reservoirs as a weapon against Bangladesh," said Zahir Faisal, a student leading the protest.
