Attack on EWMGL Complex: Protests continue

Journalists, civil society members, political leaders, and different local and international organisations are continuing their protests against the heinous attack on East West Media Group Limited (EWMGL), the largest media conglomerate in the country.
Condemning the attack, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric at a media briefing on Wednesday said, "The safety and well-being of journalists anywhere in the world is of critical importance for any country, especially for countries going through a transition."
The spokesperson said it is important that journalists be allowed to do their work and that those who commit violence against journalists be held to account.
Beh Lih Yi, the Asia Programme Coordinator of the New York-based volunteer organisation Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which works to protect the rights and dignity of working journalists worldwide, has condemned the attack on East West Media Group’s office, as well as any attacks on journalists in Bangladesh.
She said, “The authorities must prioritise the safety of journalists and bring the perpetrators to justice. Regardless of their political ideology, no journalist or newspaper office should be subjected to attacks due to their professional work.”
Meanwhile, the leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh visited the East West Media Group office on Wednesday and condemned the heinous attack.
Law Reporters Forum (LRF) President Ashraf-Ul-Alam and General Secretary Moneruzzaman Mission in a statement on Tuesday condemned the attack on the EWMGL Complex, which houses seven leading media companies of the country.
Bangladesh Medical Reporters Association (BMRA) and News Broadcasters Alliance Society of Bangladesh (NBA) also condemned the attack on the media.
Besides, journalists in different parts of the country organised human chain programme demanding the arrest of the attackers.
Some unidentified miscreants attacked the East West Media Group office in Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area on Monday afternoon.
Miscreants broke into the Radio Capital office and ransacked it. They also vandalised tables, computers and ACs in the building.
The miscreants also vandalised 20-25 cars parked in the office premises.
Kaler Kantho, Bangladesh Pratidin, Daily Sun, BanglaNews 24, News 24, T Sports and Capital Radio officers are located in three adjacent buildings of East West Media Group.
