Four descendants of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Saima Wazed Putul and Sajeeb Wazed Joy – were accused Tuesday in a case filed over the killing of a fruit trader during an anti-government demonstration.

The fruit seller Farid Sheikh was shot dead by policemen in the capital’s Jatrabari area on 4 August as he was caught between law enforcers and student-led protesters demanding the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led government.

On Tuesday, Md Sultan, the father of the deceased, filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shakil Ahmed.

Apart from the aforementioned individuals, 17 others were accused in the case.

On Tuesday, three more cases were filed against ousted premier Sheikh Hasina for allegedly ordering law enforcers and her political party activists to shoot and kill anti-government protesters, despite few of the demonstrators having ties to other political parties.

In early August, the Hasina administration’s repressive and unjust treatment of students through false cases, arbitrary detentions and abductions resulted in an outburst of anger that drew in people from different backgrounds to stage protests demanding her resignation.
