The Bangladesh Army is providing shelter to some Awami League (AL) leaders facing threats to their lives, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman said Tuesday while speaking at Rajshahi Cantonment.
They would be handed over to the law and duly punished if any case is filed against them, but until then the armed forces do not wish to see any extrajudicial action against the Awami League men, he added.
They have been given shelter solely due to the threats to their lives, and because any extrajudicial action is unwarranted against any individual irrespective of their party affiliation, opinion or creed, the army chief noted.
The army chief also said he received no information about a counter-revolution by Awami League in the month of August, the month the party’s iconic leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed back in 1975.
He also said that the Army would provide all the support possible to the interim government for reforming the state apparatus and holding fair national elections.
