The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has bought 100 umbrellas for the students who are controlling the traffic movement in the capital’s Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium area.

A team of students went to the BCB and collected 40 umbrellas as gifts from the board on Sunday while the rest of the umbrellas will be provided to the students on Monday.

Since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country, policemen have left their workplaces citing insecurity as their stations were burnt by the mobs.

Traffic police members have also left the road. To control the situation, students and volunteers from different institutions decided to come over to the road and work as traffic police to prevent chaos on the road.

Some are controlling the signals on the road. If someone breaks the signal, the driver is getting punished. Students on the streets are controlling the lanes.  Although there is no traffic police, the students have been able to control the traffic to some extent.

Students who are helping in controlling the signals are also warning motorcycle riders without helmets on the streets. They are making many traffic violators wait for 5-10 minutes on the road as punishment.

Students are also working on road cleaning. Many students are awake at night guarding the city that is missing law and order.

The BCB is trying to make the job a bit easier for all these self-initiated volunteers. Two days ago, the BCB arranged food for the students who were controlling the traffic movement and now is distributing umbrellas as a token of appreciation for the hard work students are putting in.
