A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official said on Tuesday that they are waiting for the announcement of the interim government to get guidelines for their future course of action.

BCB’s board of the directors is likely to be dissolved sooner than later after the change in power considering president Nazmul Hasan Papon along with several other board directors are currently out of country following the resignation of (former) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina considering they were backed by the ruling party and some of them were also member of the parliament.

The scenario was quite similar when the board was dissolved in 2007 and the interim government took over the charges of the country.  A 12-member interim committee, headed by Major-General Sina Ibn Jamali, was appointed by the National Sports Council (NSC) of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Around a two-year later, AHM Mustafa Kamal took over as BCB boss in September 2009 after being appointed by the Awami League government following their win in the general election in 2008.

However, it cannot be the same pathway right at the moment for BCB as the International Cricket Council (ICC) will not allow government interference in the cricket boards and as a result after the current board, which is scheduled to run till October 2025, is dissolved the new interim body takes over following the recommendation of the NSC.

BCB awaits interim govt formation for guidelinesThe NSC will need to make sure a free and fair election in the BCB gets underway without any disruption considering if that is not the case there is a chance of getting ICC sanction.

“We are waiting for the government instruction as far as running the board is concerned,” a top BCB official told the Daily Sun adding that he is quite confident that aspirants to take over the helm of BCB are aware that everything happens as per process. The announcement came hours after there was a showdown by deprived sport organisers who entered the board and walked into the board room in such a way that it seemed they are all set to make the calls despite not having any legitimate power to do that.

Rafiqul Islam Babu, former joint secretary of BCB and chairman of grounds committee, who was leading some former cricket organisers and former national stars Habibul Bashar and Minhajul Abedin under the banner ‘Cricket Organisers’, told media that they are expecting a smooth transition of power.

“We just came here to see as we learnt that there was no practice for the Under-19 team and A team. We have some tours and we want that to happen as per schedule and want to make sure that everything should go on smoothly,” he said.

“We think the government that is going to be formed thanks to the students’ mass uprising will be of fair governance. Our goal of being here today is to make sure the BCB is reconstructed through fair governance as well,” added Rafiqul. NSC secretary Aminul Islam said that they are working on creating a pathway for BCB that will help them shift the power without any problem.

“Our concerned body (of NSC) is scrutinizing what steps we need to take to create a pathway for bringing all the changes in BCB and that by abiding ICC guidelines,” Aminul told Daily Sun on Tuesday.
